Umran Malik Joins KKR for IPL 2025 Rehab: A Step Towards Comeback.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the defending champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), received a significant boost ahead of their IPL 2025 clash against Punjab Kings on April 26, 2025, at Eden Gardens. Fast bowler Umran Malik, previously ruled out of the IPL 2025 season due to a hip injury, has joined the KKR squad in Kolkata to continue his rehabilitation and “return to cricket” programme. While Malik is not an official playing member of the squad, his presence is aimed at aiding his recovery under the guidance of KKR’s support staff.

Malik, acquired by KKR for INR 75 lakh at the IPL 2025 mega auction after being released by Sunrisers Hyderabad, was initially expected to bolster the team’s pace attack. However, injuries sidelined him, leading KKR to name left-arm pacer Chetan Sakariya as his replacement in March 2025. Despite this setback, Malik’s integration into the team’s rehab programme signals optimism about his return to competitive cricket. His last competitive appearance was in IPL 2024, after which injuries and illness kept him out of action.

Known for his raw pace, Malik rose to prominence in IPL 2021, clocking speeds above 150 km/h for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has represented India in eight T20Is and ten ODIs, showcasing his potential as a tearaway pacer. KKR’s decision to include him in their setup reflects their commitment to nurturing talent, even as they navigate a challenging season with only three wins from eight matches. Fans are hopeful that Malik’s time with KKR will help him regain his form and fitness.
